Book Week took place in St Aidan’s from 30th Nov – 6th Dec. This annual event helps to promote an interest in and love of reading. Due to Covid-19 restrictions the format was slightly different to other years. However we think the children had a most enjoyable week.
The Book Fair was online this year and many thanks to all of you who purchased books. The Book Fair is a great means of enhancing our library stocks and introducing the children to up to date books, readers etc .
Junior, Senior, First and Second classes were all very impressed with the visit of Natasha Mac a Bhaird on Wednesday. Natasha has written several children’s books including Sonia O Sullivan , Hanna Spotlight and her latest book Reindeer Down . Natasha was joined by illustrator Audrey Dowling for their presentation : Reindeer Down Draw-along .
All of the children, guided by Audrey, produced some fantastic reindeer drawings.
Junior Infants had a big surprise on Wednesday when Mrs Petua Mooney paid a surprise Zoom visit to read a story.
Senior Infants were also treated to a special visit from Mrs Mary Commons and more exciting stories to be shared.
Third to Sixth classes were privileged to get to meet Nicola Pierce on Thursday. Nicola is a well-known children’s author. Most of her books are historical fiction and her best-sellers to date include Spirit of the Titanic, City of Fate and Behind the Walls.
Her presentation this week focused on her latest novel Chasing Ghosts which chronicles the failed Arctic expedition of 1845. Nicola gave the pupils an excellent insight into the amount of time that goes into research before writing a historical fiction novel.
Friday saw the return of the old favourite ” Character Day ” and once again the pupils went to great lengths to create imaginative costumes .
Well-done to all our pupils for their great stories, pictures, poems and book reviews some of which can be viewed here.
Many thanks to the Parents Association for their support with author funding and remember to keep up the good reading habits everyone !!
Congratulations to all the prizewinners .
On Friday afternoon pupils from 3rd to 6th Classes took part in a Zoom Book Quiz hosted by quizmaster -Mr Butler (principal).
